Sophia Bain Photography was born out of my love for photography and the love I have for connecting with people. I’ve seen firsthand how transformative it can be to see yourself, your loved ones, your special moments captured as authentically and beautifully as they truly are. I’ve found a true sense of fulfillment in using my creative vision to highlight and compliment the strengths of others. I’m passionate about collaborating with individuals to capture their milestones, and creating heartfelt images for them to better tell — and treasure — their stories.
A Quick Thank You
Writing this About page, I was reminded of how overwhelmingly grateful I am for all of the experiences and to and clients I’ve encountered throughout building this photography business. They’ve each played an essential role in guiding the evolution of my style and skills as a photographer. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for shaping the photographer I am today, and for the opportunity to do what I love.
I’m Sophia, a natural light photographer based out of Richmond, Virginia. I’m also currently a student at Virginia Commonwealth University, studying Fashion Merchandising. My roots are in Charlottesville, Virginia, a town I hold near and dear to my heart.
Photography has been a passion of mine since childhood. This interest was sparked by my uncle, a wedding photographer at the time, whose work continues to inspire me. He’s the one who first taught me how to use a digital camera, by which I only mean he showed me where the picture-taking button was, how to press it halfway down at first, to focus, and then all the way down to take the picture. Needless to say, I’ve learned a thing or two more about the ol’ point and shoot since then.
My professional photography experience began in high school, taking senior portraits for a few friends of mine. Senior portrait inquiries quickly started to multiply, followed by opportunities to shoot family and engagement photos. A semester into my first year at VCU, I started a job as a freelance food photographer for UberEats and GrubHub, visiting local restaurants in the Charlottesville and Richmond area to photograph menu items which are then used on the app and website.
During the same year, I was lucky enough to meet Lorraine Sanders, the founder of Spirit of 608. Lorraine is a media strategist, podcast host, and fashion industry visionary who’s become an incredible mentor to me. I spent last summer working in Charlottesville as her photography intern, styling product photos and lifestyle shoots, creating branded content for social media, and developing the Spirit of 608 website.
Since expanding my network here in Richmond, I’ve continued to do more senior portraits (now primarily for graduating college seniors), families, engagements, and am just beginning to include more wedding photography. I don’t yet know where my photography will take me, but I could not be more excited for whatever projects lie ahead!
